Literacy Focus: How Do We Know If Our Efforts Are Making a Difference?

As literacy development is one of our areas of focus for our School Story, it's important to determine if the literacy interventions listed in our Action Post are making a difference for our learners.  We have anecdotal data as well as formal assessments the clearly indicate that our students and staff's efforts to grow in our children's literacy progress is indeed making a positive impact.

Examples of Anecdotal Comments from Students:

How do you feel about yourself as a reader?

"Great, because I can read more challenging words because I know the sounds from the Sound Wall and can use them with bigger words". Grade 3 student

"I'm better at my reading now because now I can read longer books and chapter books". Grade 2 student

"Now I know my alphabet and can read words like 'cat', 'pan', and 'log'.  Grade 1 student

"I know I'm better at my reading and writing because I have more vocabulary".  Grade 4 student

We also have data from formal assessments whereby we track students' progress from the fall, January, and June.  Although the students may not all be reading at their grade benchmark levels, the data clearly indicates that students are indeed making progress---some at different rates than others.  Regardless, their progress clearly shows that the majority of our students are moving along in the proficiency scales in their literacy (specifically, reading) progress and growth.  Please see sample from a grade 4 class showing January Acadience assessments and June assessments.
